LUANGWA Boma has been flooded, area member of parliament Charles Shawa has said. And chief Mwanachingwala of Mazabuka has called on the Office of the Vice-President to send tents to three schools in his chiefdom where pupils had stopped attending classes due to floods. Shawa said that the water level had reached the market area and that most people were living in water.

“Others have since moved to higher grounds, the situation is threatening, the river (Luangwa) is swelling,” Shawa said.

He also said heavy rains had also damaged the road that was recently rehabilitated
making it impassable. Vice-President Rupiah Banda was expected in Luangwa Boma yesterday.

And chief Mwanachingwala in an interview in yesterday said Kalama, Siyowi and Itebe basic schools had been flooded in water adding that provision of tents would enable the respective school administrators relocate their schools temporarily.

Chief Mwanachingwala observed that this development had negatively affected learning in the schools.

Meanwhile, Lusaka floods mitigation taskforce spokesperson Henry Kapata said the continued throwing of sacks of sand into the main drainage in Kanyama compound was an act of sabotage by people who wanted to frustrate the government’s efforts to save lives and property.

“That is the mother of all drainages in Kanyama and if it gets flooded again, the whole area will be affected. We have informed state police and whoever will be found wanting will be prosecuted,” Kapata said.
