Diplomatic service is good training ground, says Rupiah

VICE-President Rupiah Banda has told Zambia's envoys serving abroad that their profession is good training ground for the country’s leadership. Speaking when he hosted Zambian Ambassadors and High Commissioners at his residence in Lusaka yesterday, Vice-President Banda cited himself as an example of what the future possibly held for the envoys having served in foreign missions representing the country.

He also cited communications minister Dora Siliya, presidential affairs minister Cecil Holmes and former vice-president Lupando Mwape, who is currently Zambian Ambassador to China, as other examples that reflected diplomats’ leadership potential.

“It is from this crop that the leadership of this country will have to come from,” Vice-President Banda said. “The profession in which you are is good training ground for leadership.”

He further said diplomats had an important task of marketing Zambia as a preferred investment and tourist destination.

“The advent of globalisation has meant that marketing of your country has to be aggressive and knowledge based because everybody is trying to put out as much information as possible regarding their suitability for foreign investment and international travel,” said Vice-President Banda. “In this regard, Zambia is busy positioning itself as a destination of choice. Here in Zambia as you all know we have the advantages of natural wealth such as minerals, water, forestry, wildlife, the weather, natural wonders and geographical disposition.”
