MDC-T’s double standards have once again been exposed after it emerged the opposition is contesting three by-elections — which are being held under the same conditions as the presidential run-off which it is boycotting.

MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai announced on Sunday he had withdrawn from the run-off claiming an uneven political field although legal experts said he could not do so. However, his party is contesting by-elections in Redcliff, Gwanda South and Pelandaba-Mpopoma.

Party spokesman Nelson Chamisa declined to comment yesterday accusing this newspaper of being biased against his party.

He was however, quoted by pro-opposition online publications confirming participation in the three by-elections saying the dispute over the run-off did not apply to the by-elections. He claimed "different conditions were obtaining where these elections were being conducted."

"We will only take a position on the by-elections, if our candidates on the ground raise serious concerns. The candidates have not complained, so the party will not pull out of the by-elections," Chamisa was quoted as saying.

Zanu-PF has since said Tsvangirai pulled out of the poll after realising that he would not win the election as the ruling party had re-invigorated itself while legal experts said the withdrawal is of no legal force.
