KASAMA Central Patriotic Front (PF) member of parliament Saviour Chishimba has withdrawn from the National Constitutional Conference (NCC). In an interview on Friday, Chishimba said his participation in the NCC was based on the understanding that late President Levy Mwanawasa was principled enough to deliver a constitution that would stand the test of time.

“Now that he has died, I find it very difficult to continue my membership with the NCC amidst uncertainties because the Act has got provisions which empower a sitting President to stop the process at any time,” he said.

Chishimba, who was among the 26 PF members of parliament participating in the NCC, said the current crop of old politicians would throw the process into jeopardy if they were elected into office.

“We have men who flip-flop and the whole process would be thrown into jeopardy and we may end up wasting resources,” he said.

Chishimba said the death of President Mwanawasa had given an opportunity to old political vultures to undo the good things that he initiated.

He said President Mwanawasa tried to bring something new to politics.

Asked if he had communicated his decision to withdraw to the NCC secretariat, Chishimba said he was travelling out of the country and would do so upon his return.
