Zanama accused of issuing fake title deeds

THE Zambia National Marketeers Association (Zanama) is allegedly collecting K300,000 from shop owners at Kitwe’s Chisokone Market and issuing them with fake title deeds for their shops. The association is allegedly issuing documents to marketeers entitled ‘Certificate of Ownership’, which were bearing the emblem ‘Republic of Zambia’ as its heading.

Kitwe Town Clerk Ali Simwinga said some marketeers at the market who had been issued with the fake title deeds after paying K300,000 had informed the local authority about the illegal activities of the association.

Mr Simwinga said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that, apart from getting the information from some shop owners at Chisokone Market, the local authority had a meeting with Zanama officials who admitted issuing the fake title deeds and collecting the K300,000 from marketeers.

Mr Simwinga, who displayed one of the fake title deeds, said the local authority, through Mayor Divo Katete had since advised the association to withdraw the fake title deeds and refund the money, which has been collected from the marketeers.

He said during the meeting, the association officials were told of the severe consequences of their illegal activities and the local authority was hoping that they would stop their illegal activities.

“I must say the local authority is disturbed by the illegal activities taking place at Chisokone Market where Zanama is collecting K300,000 from marketeers after issuing them with fake title deeds.

“As the association is fully aware, the issuance of the title to any land or property is a preserve of Government or its agents and therefore we find these fake title deeds in their form, highly irregular, misconceived and illegal. Your action could be construed as usurping Government’s authority and that of its organs,” Mr Simwinga said.

Mr Simwinga has since advised the association to follow procedure whenever they want to assist the traders with some form of legal documents.
