THE United States government has given Zambia US $1 million (about K3.6 billion) for the October 30 presidential election. According to a statement released yesterday, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) director Melissa Williams noted that the US was working in partnership with the Zambian government to further democratic principles.

“We are pleased to make this contribution. Free and fair elections are key to maintain democracy and the American people are committed to assisting democratic countries like Zambia,” she stated.

Williams stated that the money would be placed in the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Trust Fund to which donors were contributing.
She further stated that the fund would support the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in conducting a free, fair and transparent 2008 presidential election.
Williams stated that the US government’s support would allow the ECZ to address areas that were critical to the deepening of democracy in the country.

“This will include production of the voters register, support for voter education and the dissemination of public information on the election and electoral regulations,” she stated.
Williams stated that with an electoral system that was transparent and easily accessible, Zambians would be better informed about the electoral process and procedures and be better able to make an informed vote for the candidate of their choice.
