THE United States ambassador to Zimbabwe met with Movement for Democratic Change leaders just before the regional summit on Zimbabwe opened.
According to insider sources, the US ambassador briefed the MDC leadership on the interests of the United States in the ongoing talks.
The summit of the Southern African Development Community was not open to members of the diplomatic corps. Ambassador McGee is believed to have come up with some terms of reference for the MDC.
A source in the opposition party who spoke to the Zimbabwe Guardian said, “McGee briefed the MDC about the development in the US and how the discussions in the ongoing talks would be affected by the election of a new President in America.”
“He reassured the MDC team that there would no fundamental shift in US policy, although the Republican party stood to be replaced by US President-elect, Barack Obama’s administration.”
McGee is due to step down as Ambassador to Zimbabwe in less than two months.
He met with the MDC’s international relations chief Eliphas Mukonoweshuro, MP Jameson Timba and legal advisor Innocent Chagonda before the summit opened.
Our source said the invitation to the briefing was not extended to the Zanu PF party.
It is also believed that former US Ambassador to Zimbabwe Christopher Dell was also present in that meeting although he is currently serving as Deputy Chief of Mission in Kabul, Afghanistan.
“We were surprised to see (Christopher) Dell at the venue. Last time I saw Dell was at the Harare airport in July last year,” said our source.
