Tsvangirai seeks audience with Mugabe over militias

OPPOSITION leader Morgan Tsvangirai has been seeking an audience with President Mugabe to discuss the ongoing saga about MDC militias being trained in Botswana, the Herald reports. According to the report President Mugabe has snubbed Tsvangirai’s overtures. President Mugabe would like the issue handled by the Southern African Development Community since the MDC leader asked for intervention by all regional leaders.
According to a report in the daily, officials from both Zanu PF and MDC confirmed that Tsvangirai made the overtures soon after President Mugabe arrived in Sandton for an extraordinary Sadc Summit convened to discuss Zimbabwe’s Cabinet talks and the humanitarian situation in eastern DRC.
“Zanu PF sources also confided that Tsvangirai had sent an intermediary to try and speak with President Mugabe earlier in the week in Harare following a meeting of Sadc Home Affairs ministers in Mozambique during which Zimbabwe presented information linking the opposition to the training of militias,” reported the paper.
"President Mugabe rejected the overtures and said it was too late for Tsvangirai to try and put a lid on the unfolding saga because the entire Sadc leadership was aware of what was going on,” the Herald quoted a source.
The Herald reported that “Allegations are that the opposition is angling for a total collapse of the Cabinet talks and then use the militias to destabilize the country and force the staging of a fresh presidential election under ‘international supervision’ early next year.”
“Information made available so far implicates Botswana, the United States and Britain in the plot. Botswana’s President Ian Khama was not present at the summit.”
Sadc has said it will look seriously into the allegations.
