A marketeer at Soweto Market yesterday narrated in court how he was instructed by Base Chemicals chief executive officer Amon Sibande to inspect a truck at Brigadier General Andrew Nyirongo’s residence.

This is in a case where former Zambia Air Force (ZAF) commander Lieutenant General Sande Kayumba is facing abuse of authority and corruption charges. Lieutenant General Kayumba is separately charged with former ZAF chief of logistics Brig Gen Nyirongo.

Edwin Mofya testified that Sibande, who was his boss at the time, instructed him to inspect the truck in question because he was about to enter into a lease agreement with Brig Gen Nyirongo.

Mofya told the court that at the time of inspection, the truck was in good condition.

He said he then went to tell Sibande his findings but did not find him at the office.

Mofya told the court that he later decided to leave the message with one of the managers, a Mr Chipalo.

In cross-examination, Mofya testified that during the inspection, he checked for the truck’s suitability and roadworthiness.

When re-examined by one of the defence lawyer’s Remmy Mainza, Mofya said the truck had two trailers and it was possible to separate them.
