PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda yesterday appealed to political leaders to desist from using issues involving the security and defence forces for their political propaganda.
In a statement issued by State House chief analyst for press and public relations Dickson Jere, President Banda, who held a scheduled defence council meeting, noted with sadness the trend by some opposition leaders who had continued issuing careless statements that bordered on inciting the defence and security personnel by claiming that government was not addressing the problems affecting them.

However, President Banda said government was working hard to improve the conditions of service for defence and security personnel.

He said the government, through the defence council, had addressed several issues concerning the security and defence forces such as accommodation and the general welfare of the personnel.

President Banda also said the government had tackled issues concerning senior officers on contracts.

On Friday, Sata said President Banda had deviated from the norm by allowing about 41 senior army officers to unnecessarily remain on contract at the expense of junior officers that crave for promotions.
