POLICE in Chipata last Wednesday picked up a decomposed body of a traditional healer who drowned after heavy rains last week.

Msanga ward councilor in Chipata Central constituency Rosemary Samboko, who visited the scene, confirmed the incident in an interview in Chipata.

Samboko said Samuel Phiri, commonly known as Satana Sanafe, drowned on the stream that separates Mtendere and Chimvano section.

"This man had gone to chief Mishoro area in Kasenengwa area so he met his fate when coming back from this place. People didn't know that he had been swept away until some dogs started feasting on the body," Samboko said.

She said police and council officers who visited the scene advised that the body be buried on the same day.

Samboko said there was need to fix culverts at the stream that had never been maintained for a very long time.

"This stream is very dangerous because it has never been repaired, governments have come and gone without fixing culverts at this stream," said Samboko.

Five people have drowned in Chipata district since the beginning of the rainy season.

Recently, Chipata Central member of parliament Lameck Mangani said the district had experienced water logging because the major drainage had been tempered with.

Mangani said K40 million had been set aside to help reconstruct the damaged drainage.
