Tsvangirai may testify in crash driver’s trial

PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is likely to testify at the trial of a truck driver accused of causing the accident that killed his wife Susan. The State yesterday indicated that the trial date for the truck driver, Chinoona Mwanda, on charges of culpable homicide would be set on April 20.
Prosecutor Mr John Hama later told The Herald that in normal circumstances Prime Minister Tsvangirai should give evidence since he was in the same vehicle with his wife.
"The State is therefore likely to call him to testify on its behalf,’’ he said.
Mwanda, who is represented by Mr Chris Mhike of Atherstone and Cook, has not been asked to plead on the allegations.
It is the State’s case that on March 6 this year he was driving a Nissan UD truck, registered to the US embassy, that was involved in an accident with Prime Minister Tsvangirai’s vehicle along the Harare-Masvingo highway.
It is believed that Mwanda lost control of the vehicle sideswiping the Prime Minister’s car near Featherstone.
Mrs Tsvangirai died on the spot while he sustained head and neck injuries.
