RB arrives in Zimbabwe

PRESIDENT Banda yesterday arrived in Harare, Zimbabwe to a rousing welcome as he starts his four-day State visit.

The Zambia Air Force plane carrying Mr Banda touched down at 15.30 hours to a rousing welcome by scores of Zimbabwean nationals led by President Robert Mugabe.

Zambia’s High Commissioner to Zimbabwe Dr Sipula Kabanje and Zambians resident in Zimbabwe were also at the airport to welcome Mr Banda.

Mr Banda was given a 21 gun salute after which he inspected the guard of honour mounted by the Zimbabwean defence forces.

And KASUBA MULENGA reports that according to a statement issued by State House special assistant for press and public relations, Dickson Jere, Mr Banda yesterday held talks with President Robert Mugabe and other officials from the Unity Government before he attended a State banquet hosted in his honour in Harare.

Today, Mr Banda and Dr Mugabe are expected to travel to Bulawayo where the Zambian leader will officially open the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.

Mr Banda will first tour various stands of exhibitors that include Zambian business houses taking part in the trade fair.

The President was accompanied by his wife, Thandiwe, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Felix Mutati, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Brian Chituwo and Copperbelt Minister Mwansa Mbulakulima.

Others who are in the company of the President are Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Development Gladys Lundwe and other senior Government officials.
Mr Banda is expected to return home on Saturday.
