UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema yesterday said campaigns for the 2011 elections are on, saying he has a personal obligation to take the UPND into government. And Hichilema said the act of a monkey urinating on President Rupiah Banda at last Wednesday's function at State House signifies that his end is near.

Opening the UPND extraordinary general assembly at the party secretariat, Hichilema said going through two presidential elections in two and half years was quite traumatic but he took it as a challenge.

"Today we are here looking to 2011, what I call a genuine election and I’m sending a message to MMD, watch the space. We are going to a genuine election. Just watch what we are going to do. We must say to ourselves 2011 is the genuine election that we are going to have. I have made a personal resolution that 11 years plus of the party resilience, all the threats and intimidation from the MMD you are here," Hichilema said.

"I have only one personal obligation to take you into government in 2011. And I am hoping my colleagues here share that obligation because it is the only way we can implement things upon which UPND was founded which is economic and social independence. I hope you know that we have been advising the MMD government. Nobody will implement our vision better than ourselves and the only way we are going to implement our vision of development is by winning an election. No one will implement our vision unless we do it ourselves by winning an election."

He said time for change was now and that change was inevitable.

"The era of a new Zambian leadership is at hand. With this in mind, as your NEC and National Management Committee (NMC) after deliberations, we entered into an electoral pact with our sister party the Patriotic Front. The mission of the pact is simple and tenable," Hichilema said.

He urged the party to participate fully and freely.

"...Knowing that the challenges that lie ahead can only be overcome if we work in harmony and unity with our colleagues the PF. This unity of purpose cannot be overemphasized but we as UPND must put in our very best of hard work," Hichilema said.

"We cannot allow Mr Rupiah Banda to go past 2011. Otherwise, the trail of destruction to this country that Mr Rupiah Banda has already left is intolerable."

He said President Banda had failed the legacy of the late Levy Mwanawasa upon which he campaigned for the presidency.

"Have you realised in the last 20 days how the MMD people are jumping all over? Even nature is angry. Did you see what happened?" he asked.

He said people were discussing the incident of the monkey because it had never happened in the history of the country during the tenure of the past three Republican presidents.

"You know, some things are historical, when you start seeing certain signs you must know that the end for those people is near," said Hichilema.
