THE MDC-T leadership has resolved to expel Chitungwiza mayor, councillor Israel Marange after he was slapped with an effective one-year jail term for criminal abuse of office.

A Harare magistrate last month jailed Clr Marange for taking a US$1 000 bribe from a home seeker to facilitate the allocation of residential stands in the town.

Marange, who is challenging both the conviction and sentence, has since been granted US$3 000 bail by the High Court pending an appeal.

MDC-T is, however, yet to communicate the decision to Clr Marange, according to reliable sources.

The decision follows a meeting of the MDC-T national council and national executive recently.

Sources say the decision to fire Clr Marange followed pressure from the party structures in Chitungwiza on the leadership.

The party spokesperson Nelson Chamisa would neither confirm nor deny Clr Marange’s dismissal when contacted for comment yesterday.

“I am glad to say the matter has been dealt with by the leadership of the party.

“We are waiting for formal processes of the party to take shape in announcing the decision,” he said.

Various MDC-T members including members of parliament have been charged with various offences ranging from theft to common assault.

At least four MPs have been found guilty and jailed this year. - HR/TZG
