THE Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) party's Makoni South MP and Manicaland provincial spokesperson, Pishai Muchauraya was arrested Tuesday by Mutare police on charges of common assault. Muchauraya is currently detained at Mutare Central Police Station.

The MDC says "there are strong indications that the police (will) detain him overnight although the ... charge he is facing is fineable."

His lawyer, Chris Ndlovu yesterday said the police were "saying they want to wait for the Superintendent in charge of crime to determine whether Muchauraya should be detained or released."

Muchauraya had allegedly been on the run after he allegedly brutally assaulted a maid employed by a woman believed to be his girlfriend accusing her of stealing over US$20,000.

Police had launched a manhunt for the MDC-T legislator. Muchauraya had previously issued a statement saying he was not aware of the case.

“That’s false information. They are manufacturing the story against me,” he said.
