TRADITIONAL leaders in Luapula Province on Friday resolved to support the acquittal of former president Frederick Chiluba.

In a joint statement after the provincial chiefs’ meeting held at Mansa Hotel, chiefs Chisunka, Mushota, Puta, Lukwesa and Nsamba noted that traditional leaders in the province were not happy with the attacks on their “son” Chiluba.

The traditional leaders stated that they were not happy with the attacks on President Rupiah Banda.

“We are concerned the way some politicians and the NGOs who are attacking the former president and want to go back to court over the judgment,” they stated.

The chiefs urged the people to respect the ruling of the courts on Chiluba.

They stated that President Banda should not even be accused of having played a part in the judgment.

The chiefs also refuted reports that they were not in good terms with the provincial administration.

They stated that people peddling such information were liars and bent on winning political mileage.

They stated that they enjoyed good relations with provincial minister Dr Boniface Kawimbe and permanent secretary Jazzman Chikwakwa.

The chiefs in the province also elected senior chief Puta, chief Nsamba and chief Kasomalwela to represent them at the House of Chiefs.

They also elected chief Chisunka as their chairperson for the Luapula Province chief council.
