A fight among MMD cadres broke out at Ndola International Airport yesterday as they awaited the arrival of Vice-President George Kunda. The cadres started fighting after MMD district youth chairman Patrick Nyasulu attacked a security official identified as Geoffrey Matafwali.

This was after Matafwali, who was leading a group of cadres suspected to be working with former finance minister Ng’andu Magande and former defence minister George Mpombo, refused to leave Ndola International Airport where they had gone to welcome Vice-President Kunda.

Nyasulu ordered Matafwali and his group to leave the airport, but he and his group refused. This led to a free-for-all exchange of punches after Nyasulu attacked Matafwali.

Police had to move in to stop the fight and detained Matafwali at Ndola International Airport police station.

Ndola district MMD officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said the few beatings of those who were not for President Rupiah Banda had been lined up.

“We sorted out a security official who works with Mpombo and Magande,” the MMD district official said. “Next in line is Mpombo. Those who don’t want to work with Rupiah Banda, we will sort them out physically.”

Vice-President Kunda arrived later after calm had returned at the airport.
