THE just ended Zanu PF 5th

People's National Congress was been characterized by robust, albeit, constructive debate, synonymous with a democracy which people in Zimbabwe have come to take for granted.

In spite of the hype associated with the recent resignation of Bezel Nyabadza, the Zanu PF Manicaland Provincial Chairman on the eve of the congress, Zanu PF rank and file accepted that the former chairman exercised his democratic right.

No vitriol was directed at Nyabadza indicating the maturity of the politics of this country.

The ideals of democracy which the party espouses were more evident in the content and tone of President Mugabe's keynote address during the opening of the Congress.

He stated that: "We have adhered to the constitution of the party and the country to the letter. No one can fault us in that respect.

"In fact we do not need sermons from other quarters. Within the party, we can differ amicably," said the President.

Needless to point out that the purpose of the protracted liberation struggle was to propound the values and principles of a democratic and just society.

The persecution of the country by the West and its allies is an affront to the departed heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice and the living whose role is now being demeaned.
