Police in Thyolo on Wednesday arrested Lifred Nawena Member of Parliament for Thyolo Thava on suspicious that he “hired” roughnecks to attack the Khulumula family following a land dispute. Police officers in Thyolo said they detained Nawena and questioned him over reports that he hired a group of men to attack Khulumula.

“Police picked Hon Nawena for questioning. The investigations are going on but the matter will go to court,” said an officer.

Nawena, formerly a propagandist on public broadcaster for the ruling DPP and now a bitter critic is reported to have been cultivating in Khulumula’s land without any agreement.

According to Daily Times, the lawmaker, a former lecture at Polytechnique, has ignored several reminders from Thyolo District Commissioner Bester Mandere to stop him from cultivating on the land.

The paper reported that a group of about 30 people including Nawena’s son attacked them when they went to inspect the land on December 25.

“It was hell. Our uncle Daudi Chidakwani was severely beaten because he failed to runaway,” Daily Times quoted Charles Khulumula.
