A CHITUNGWIZA councillor Godfrey Mangoma from the MDC-T party was on Monday jailed for three years for swindling a desperate homeseeker of US$400 after he fraudulently sold him four non-existent residential stands.

Mangoma’s imprisonment came barely six months after former Chitungwiza mayor Israel Marange was jailed for a similar offence.

Chitungwiza provincial magistrate Brighton Pabwe sentenced Mangoma to four years, but suspended 10 months on condition of good behaviour.

A further two months were set aside on condition Mangoma restitutes Mr Enock Sachiti the US$400 before the end of February.

Pabwe said Mangoma abused his position in council to con unsuspecting and desperate homeseekers.

Offences of that nature were now prevalent in Chitungwiza and that a deterrent sentence was appropriate in the circumstances.
