Zimbabwean politicians should compromise on certain issues if the inclusive Government is to succeed, the head of a visiting European Parliamentary delegation said yesterday.

Speaking after meeting Vice President John Nkomo at his Munhumutapa Offices in Harare, president of the Association of European Parliamentarians Africa Mrs Miet Smet also said it was important for everyone to support the inclusive Government to make it a success.

She said her organisation was looking at building the capacity of local legislators on peace and reconciliation issues.

"The inclusive Government must be supported by everyone and the politicians here have to work for its success. They have to compromise.

"We are looking at the interests of Zimbabwe’s political leaders and the training of new Members of Parliament. We want to help with the healing and reconciliation process," she said

Mrs Smet said they had met various donors and Western diplomats accredited to Zimbabwe to source funding for their programme.

She said the training programme would start once a Memorandum of Understanding had been signed between her organisation and the Parliament of Zimbabwe.

"We are ready to start after we sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Speaker and President of the Senate," she said.

The inclusive Government established an Organ on National Healing and Reconciliation at its formation to encourage peaceful co-existence among supporters of different political parties.

Mrs Smet and her delegation will meet representatives from Zanu-PF, MDC-T, MDC and Parliament’s presiding officers during their stay.

The association works with African legislative bodies to facilitate dialogue between the continent and Europe. It brings together 78 European political parties and has an office in South Africa. It has worked with African parliaments since 1985.
