Mutambara MDC appoints Dangarembga

NOVELIST and film director Tsitsi Dangarembga is venturing into politics after being named as the secretary for education in a portfolio reshuffle by the Movement for Democratic Change led by Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara. The MDC said the death of its secretary for lands Renson Gasela and disciplinary committee chairman Lyson Mlambo in a car crash last month forced the mini-reshuffle.
Mangwe MP Edward Mkhosi is the new secretary for lands and agriculture, while Sibongile Mgijima replaces Mlambo, according to a list provided by the party’s secretary general Welshman Ncube on Monday. But it is the surprise inclusion of Dangarembga that will grab most attention.
Dangarembga, 51, has been a vocal critic of President Robert Mugabe’s government – and now it seems she plans to challenge the long-time ruler at a political level.
The author of the award-winning novel Nervous Conditions, Dangarembga is also credited for the highly acclaimed films Neria, Everyone’s Child and Elephant People.
She was born in Mutoko in 1959, moving to England with her parents two years later before returning home in 1980 as Zimbabwe won independence from white colonial rule.
