Sata tells Rupiah to emulate Lula’s serious mindedness

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) president Michael Sata yesterday asked President Rupiah Banda to emulate the serious mindedness of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Commenting on President Lula’s visit to Zambia which lasted less than a 24 hours, Sata said President Lula was not a tourist like President Banda, but a serious minded leader who came to talk about issues and immediately left.

He said President Lula was not like President Banda who spent more than a week on an official state visit to China.

“He came for a day and left. He is a serious minded President. He knows what he came here for. He did not come to enjoy overstaying. He is not a tourist and I hope our President is learning something. Come, talk and get back here. The work is here in Zambia,” Sata said.

He said Zambia would only move forward if the leaders in government knew what they wanted to achieve for the country.

Sata said President Banda had the fortune of some serious minded leaders visiting the country.

“Even the President of Chad, when he came, he came to talk business…so everybody who has been here, they come to talk business and they leave,” he said.

Sata charged that the desperation shown by those in government over the secret visit of Chadian President Idriss Deby was evidence that they were trying to hide something.

“It can’t be anything less than a deal. There must be a number of deals and that’s why you see the sequence of events. This man comes, cuts a deal, and Vice-President George Kunda says ‘we remove abuse of office from corruption’. This is the sequence. They sale Zamtel, they say ‘we are not going to have any more operators in Zambia’,” said Sata.

President Lula recently visited Zambia before he proceeded to South Africa.
He arrived in the country on Wednesday in the late afternoon and left early Thursday afternoon.
