THE Bulawayo provincial council of the MDC formation led by Professor Arthur Mutambara met on Saturday and resolved to nominate Prof Welshman Ncube as presidential candidate ahead of the party’s congress early next year.

Prof Ncube, presently the secretary-general, has already indicated that he is willing to run for the party presidency if party members want him to lead them in a more senior capacity.

The provincial council comprises of the 17 provincial members, 16 members of the women’s wing, 16 members of the youth wing and all the 12 district chairpersons of the party.

All members reportedly attended the Saturday meeting which also touched on next year’s possible general elections and the ongoing constitutional-making process.

A source told The Chronicle newspaper: “The meeting sat and the provincial council unanimously agreed that they had to select a candidate from Bulawayo Province. It was also revealed in the meeting that there are eight other provinces that will back Bulawayo’s nomination.”

“It was also agreed in the meeting that leaders should be chosen on merit than on tribal lines,” added the source.

The source said the province has previously nominated party leaders from other provinces ahead of members from Bulawayo, an indication that tribe or region is not a matter.
