Govt won’t invite angels to run institutions - MunkombweBy Edwin Mbulo

WE will not invite angels to run our institutions, Daniel Munkombwe has said. And Munkombwe, who is deputy minister in the Office of the Vice-President, said anyone intending to stand against President Rupiah Banda at the MMD convention would be beating a rock with bare fists.
Reacting to UNIP president Tilyenji Kaunda’s statement that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was not independent to conduct the 2011 polls with its current setup, Munkombwe said the government would not invite angels to administer its functions.
“…When there is a problem affecting the opposition, then the judiciary is wrong,” Munkombwe said.
“When there is a by-election and the MMD wins, the ECZ is wrong but when they win the Chilanga seat, the ECZ is correct and when they go to the Copperbelt and win elections, the ECZ is correct but in Southern Province, the ECZ is wrong and can’t run elections. Do we need angels to come and run elections?”
He added that when justice Florence Mumba was appointed chairperson of the ECZ, there was jubilation from the opposition and now wondered what Tilyenji meant when he said the ECZ could not run elections.
And Munkombwe said he would continue “singing the song” that Rupiah Banda should be the president of the ruling MMD and urged other people to “sing along”.
“I’m going to the convention because I qualify to attend and it is not only me but a lot of other people. Yes, I started the song and I will continue to sing and I want others to join.
Rupiah has no opponent and anyone who wants to stand against Rupiah will be hitting a hard rock with bare fists,” he said.
Munkombwe said he would not allow violence at the MMD convention just like he did not during the UNIP convention when Enoch Kavindele stood against Kenneth Kaunda.
“…I will not allow violence just like I did when Kavindele stood against Kaunda. People who were backing him ran away but I went to him and greeted him. He was fighting a rock with bare fists and that will happen with the MMD convention,” Munkombwe said.
And Munkombwe said Kafulafuta member of parliament George Mpombo was proving himself useless.
“I will not spend time commenting on my brother George Mpombo; he has achieved what he wanted, that is being anti-MMD.
He is singing a useless voice (tune) and those who want to use him are free,” said Munkombwe.
