NAPSA deal shows corruption in govt - Fr Luonde

THE NAPSA deal has clearly shown the rampant corrupt activities in President Rupiah Banda's government, says Fr Richard Luonde. Fr Luonde, an Anglican priest based in Kitwe, said President Banda would one day be held accountable for siphoning money and property using public institutions.

He said Zambians were able to see that the government was full of manipulation and the revelations that the President had influence in the purchase of 1,500 acres of land at an exorbitant price of US $15 million from Meanwood Properties Development Limited without following tender procedure was not a surprise.

Fr Luonde said President Banda's administration was on a looting mission and quasi-government institutions such as the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) had been weakened.

“We expect the NAPSA board to concentrate on enhancing the operations of the authority instead of defending the already dented image of the President and the MMD. Poor people who are eligible to get their pensions die without enjoying the fruits of their labour due to the inefficiencies at the institution,” he said.

“It is disappointing that people's money at NAPSA is being mismanaged just like that.”

He said Zambians should take keen interest in the corrupt and manipulative manner the MMD government was handling national affairs and judge for themselves whether the country had sincere leaders or not.

Fr Luonde said Zambians would remain in perpetual poverty if people holding government power were not held accountable over their illegal dealings.

“NAPSA belongs to Zambian workers who remit a huge chunk of their hard-earned money. It is immoral for our leaders to continue manipulating the people through such illegal dealings and Zambians should not succumb to this manipulation,” said Fr Luonde.
