IT will be fatal to expect President Rupiah Banda to ensure free, fair and transparent elections this byear, says an MMD councillor. Mwenda Lishebo, who is MMD Mulambwa ward councilor in Mongu, said President Banda was a desperate leader riding on a desperate legacy.

He said it was public knowledge that both the print and electronic media had been turned into MMD propaganda tools and will continue to be such even as the country got closer to the elections.

“There is no doubt that it would be fatally risky to trust a desperate leader like President Banda who is riding on a desperate legacy to ensure free, fair and transparent elections,” said Lishebo in an interview from Mongu.

And commenting on the performance of the MMD in Mongu, Lishebo the incumbent Parliamentarian, Joseph Mulyata, had been the worst legislator.

“The man has simply been a disaster,” he said.

On the death of 92-year-old former Ngambela of Barotseland Maxwell Mututwa, Lishebo said Mututwa had done that which Napoleon could not do at the height of his glory over the Barotseland Agreement of 1964.

Lishebo said Mututwa’s works would remain a source of inspiration.

Mututwa, who was released from prison through a nolle prosequi after being arrested on treason charges following the January 14 Mongu fracas over the Barotseland Agreement, died at his home in Senanga last week.
