COMMENT - Instead of getting busy at election time because they know their everyday policies of benefiting foreign investors are extremely unpopular, why doesn't the MMD just develop the country every year?

Rupiah predicts easy victory for MMD

THIS year’s election will be the easiest one for the MMD due to the visible projects being undertaken to uplift people’s livelihoods, says President Rupiah Banda. And President Banda says a leader is supposed to be a servant of the people.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt MMD chairman Joseph Chilambwe has said people who attended body viewing but did not attend the burial programme of Frederick Chiluba are supposed to be considered as ‘wizards.’

Addressing MMD cadres that welcomed him at Ndola Airport on Thursday where he opened the 47th Zambia International Trade Fair, President Banda said people will decide on who should govern them.

“So don’t listen to false prophets but be focused and don’t let anyone disturb us as MMD because we have to ensure that all projects are completed and this will be an easy election since what we are doing is visible and we shall just point at what we have done,” President Banda said.

“I am confident and ready about these elections whose date I will announce soon and I strongly feel the results will go the MMD’s way since we are trying our best to uplift the livelihoods of people. So party members should not get tired because we are almost at touchline.”

He said the MMD is composed of human beings who could make errors.

“We have a long list of people wishing to be adopted and we can’t pick everyone and we can make mistakes but this should not divide us and those who will feel bad when not selected are not true MMD so it will be good riddance,” President Banda said.

In his message to mark the 47th Zambia International Trade Fair, President Banda said creativity should not be restricted to quality, competition, research and development that lead to better and improved products.

“It must be extended to aspects such as finding cheaper and more economical ways of financing new investments or expanding existing ones. There is need for firms to be ingenious in sourcing capital for investment. Relying on traditional sources of finance such as banks may continue to prove challenging in the short to medium term,” said President Banda. “Companies should use other creative options for financing like stock markets and joint ventures with large firms or foreign investors with capital also offer alternative sources of finance.”

And in apparent reference to PF leader Michael Sata, Chilambwe said where he comes from, a person is considered a mourner after attending burial.

“If you end up at body viewing you are regarded as a wizard…and despite good things being done by President Banda, a certain media organisation does not see this and they continue portraying a wrong picture but what they don’t know is that they are campaigning for RB since Zambians are wiser,” said Chilambwe.

And during a rally at Dola Hill in Ndola, President Banda said he will continue working for Zambians until the day of the elections and that no one will stop him.

“A leader is supposed to be a servant of the people and to do their will. So I will continue working for Zambians. People are going to say that these are just campaigns, but campaign is above what you can do for the people and I will continue to work until the day of the elections and no one will stop me,” he said.

President Banda also said 2,000 Zambian families on the Copperbelt will benefit from the latest home ownership programme.

He said he wanted to shame his critics by empowering Zambians with cheap houses.

“Whatever good I do for the poor Zambians, the opposition will always ridicule me. They were busy saying that President Rupiah Banda’s government is not fixing roads. When I fix the roads, the rise again to say, why is he fixing roads, where is he getting the money from? Anything good I do for Zambians is bad for the opposition,” said President Banda.
