POLITICIANS ought to be mindful of falling prey to putting their interest above that of the general citizenry, says Young African Leaders Initiative board chairperson Andrew Ntewewe.

In an interview yesterday, Ntewewe said his organisation expected politicians to provide good health, education, food, employment and ensuring the better enjoyment of people’s liberties and freedoms to participate in the affairs of the country.

“They should not use these elections just as a platform to seek jobs and improve their personal livelihoods and that of their close relatives,” Ntewewe said.

Ntewewe said young leaders must brainstorm to find effective strategies of taking up the mantle of leadership.

“It requires concerted efforts by all young leaders across the country to make a meaningful contribution to the development of our motherland Zambia,” Ntewewe said.

“This requires resilience, hard work and sacrifice in the medium term, but the lasting impact will be felt by all and sundry when these young leaders take up leadership.”

Ntewewe said young leaders have to realise that to move Zambia out of the dilemma of poverty requires new ideas and innovation.

Ntewewe said Zambia requires a sound leadership that is innovative and can motivate the masses to believe in the future and possibility of the country.

“Young leaders must realise and appreciate the fact that they hold the key that will unlock the potential of our country,“ he said.

Ntewewe said young leaders must resist the temptation of being used and later on dumped by politicians.
