THE people of Petauke Central have decided to tame Dora Siliya, says PF Petauke Central candidate Leonard Banda. In an interview from Musumbazi ward yesterday, Banda said Siliya had angered many people in Petauke Central because of her foul language.
"The ground is very fertile for me in Petauke Central because the former MP has failed. Siliya has failed but she just wants to hide in the name of RB (Rupiah Banda) through the wako niwako syndrome. You know Dora has angered many people from the church, the women, the traditional leaders and from many sectors because of her foul language and they want to tame her on 20th September," Banda said.
"Right now I am in Musumbazi ward and the Musumbazi bridge broke down a long time ago but has not been repaired. You know this bridge is very important because it connects to many important places."
He also said maize marketing in Petauke had been characterised by corruption because top government officials and MMD members were being given priority in the payment system.
"Last week, some farmers marched to the district commissioner's office to complain over what is happening. The main issues that they complained of were the exploitation and the preferential treatment that was given to some people who align themselves to MMD. But up to now things have not improved," he said.
Banda said farmers should not be exploited because farming was their livelihood.
"The government should always safeguard the interests of the poor farmers. What is obtaining is not good, where priority is given to top government officials who sometimes (have) their receipts prepared before they sell their maize," said Banda.
But Petauke district commissioner Jacob Mwanza said Food Reserve Agency had let the Petauke farmers down.
"The problem is with FRA not that government is giving priority to top government officials or what, no. Yes, the protest was there and the people came to complain about FRA and not what he is saying. Let him (Banda) just concentrate on his campaigns. The problem that is there is that of GRNs (Goods Received Notes)," Mwanza said.
He said Banda was free to approach his office and complain about the matters to do with marketing rather than making unnecessary statements.
"Anyway, do you expect him to say something good about the government?" asked Mwanza.
