Winnie Mandela slates ANC over Malema

ANC veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has spoken out against the ANC leadership’s disciplinary process against Julius Malema. In a stirring acceptance speech of the 2011 National Heritage Council Ubuntu Award at Gallagher Estate on Friday night, Madikizela-Mandela said no other leader of the ANC Youth League had had to endure such treatment.
“No other leader of the youth has gone through what you have,” she told Malema.
Malema faces charges of sowing divisions within the ANC and bringing the party into disrepute.
His disciplinary hearing will resume on Thursday with ANC heavyweights including Madikizela-Mandela, Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale and national executive committee member Tony Yengeni set to testify in his defence.
Madikizela-Mandela said she wants Malema to liberate the country, adding: “Come to me and I will show you how."
Malema’s supporters say the case against him is part of a plot by ANC leader Jacob Zuma and secretary general Gwede Mantashe to weaken him ahead of the party's national conference next year, at which the league will be pushing for Vice President Kgalema Motlanthe and Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula to take over as president and secretary-general, respectively.
Youth league members staged a violent protest outside the ANC's Luthuli House HQ on the first day of the hearing over a month ago.
