FARMERS have called on government to urgently investigate Finance Minister Tendai Biti whom they accuse of sabotaging the country by holding on to millions of dollars meant for farmers ahead of this summer cropping season.

The farmers said it is high time Biti is brought to book. They lambasted the finance minister for allegedly holding on to millions of dollars worth of maize bought by the Grain Marketing Board.

A2 farmer, Edson Makina who spoke on behalf of thousands of farmers from Mashonaland East Province said while Biti has demonstrated his agenda to derail the land reform programme, it is the right time he should be reprimanded for holding the country at ransom.

“It now seems as punishment. It is so disappointing that after producing and delivering our grains to the GMB, we are still not yet paid.

“This is just politicking, maybe they want us to quit farming to pave way for their friends, the white farmers,” said Makina.

Another farmer, Nelma Mahupeta described Biti as not only “the enemy of farmers” but a puppet of the West, being used to achieve the interest of the British.

” It is now clear that Minister Biti is sabotaging the agrarian reform. So we now appeal for his resignation so that someone else better can come in,” Mahupeta said.

Veteran farmer, Edward Raradza concurred that Biti has let down the country and should go.

This is not the first time Biti has been on the wrong end as far as supporting agriculture is concerned.

Since he came into office, he has been deliberately frustrating farmers in what analysts say are moves to sabotage the land reform programme and starve the nation to create civil unrest.

This will turn voters against the government led by President Mugabe in favour of the MDC-T party of Morgan Tsvangirai.
