Zanu-PF Harare Province has unanimously endorsed President Mugabe as the party’s candidate for elections scheduled for next year, bringing to six the number of provinces to officially throw their weight behind him ahead of the National Conference in Bulawayo.

Masvingo, Matabeleland North, Midlands, Matabeleland South and Bulawayo took the same route at their respective conferences held over the past few weeks. In an interview after a conference in the capital yesterday, Zanu-PF provincial chairman Cde Amos Midzi said the endorsement reaffirmed what was already a foregone conclusion.

“The delegates took into account the correct position of selecting the best candidate to represent the revolutionary party come election time,” he said.
“It was, however, mere reaffirmation and reconfirmation of a position that is already known.
“The delegates were all unanimous in their choice of the candidate, as they chose a candidate who could represent the party with distinction next year.”

He said the conference castigated homosexuality and those who recognise it.

“We also adopted a position that those who have already benefited from the indigenisation programme should give way to others in order to spread the benefits and opportunities,” he said.

In a speech read on his behalf, Zanu-PF national chairman Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo said all the party structures should not impose candidates. He also called on party supporters to shun violence, saying Zanu-PF was peace-loving.

“There should be no imposition of candidates whatsoever, from cell, branch, district and province or for parliamentary elections.

“We must listen to and implement their wishes. I want to make it clear that according Article 12 Sections 89-113, the provincial chairman and his executive run the province.

“Politburo members, Central Committee members, NCA members do not run provinces. Their functions are clearly spelt out under Article 9 of the (Zanu-PF) constitution.

“These senior leaders of the party are expected to offer advice and assist the provincial executive to run the affairs of the province smoothly.”
