RESIDENTS of Kitwe's Bulangililo Township on Friday rioted for the second time following the death of three children that were hit by a Canter light truck.

On Wednesday, residents of Bulangililo ran amok after a Mitsubishi Canter light truck knocked down six children, two of whom died on the spot and another on Thursday while three others are nursing serious injuries in Kitwe Central Hospital.

The riots were sparked by the careless speeding driver of an Toyota Corolla unregistered in Kazembe road, a day after the Canter truck hit six children.

The mob that forced the car to stop beat up the driver and smashed the windscreen before he was rescued by two police officers and a Paronama security guard.

The instant mob also attacked one of the passers-by who tried to rescue the man before running for safety.

"People here are annoyed with these irresponsible drivers following the death of our children who were killed on Wednesday by that Canter track. We will never allow anyone to speed in this road and since we can't be protected by the traffic police, we have started policing ourselves," said Kelly Kapya, a resident of Bulangililo.

The driver of the Canter truck identified as Patrick Miti, 33, of house number 213 Kwacha township is in police custody.
