Treasury has released US$22,5 million for payment to farmers who delivered maize and wheat to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) during the 2011/12 grain marketing season. The GMB is expected to disburse the funds through the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system, starting this week.

In a statement yesterday, GMB corporate communications manager Mr Joseph Katete said the concerned farmers should check their bank accounts. He said the parastatal and Agribank agreed that the money should be paid through the financial institution.

“We wish to advise farmers who delivered their wheat and maize to the national granary during the 2011/12 season that Treasury has released a total amount of US$22,5 million to cover the payment of wheat and maize for the 2011/12 season,’’ he said. Mr Katete said the payment would be disbursed to Agribank, FBC Bank, CBZ and Standard Chartered, among other financial institutions.

“We appeal to the above-mentioned disbursing banks to ensure availability of cash and speedy processing of the RTGS so as to minimise inconveniences to the farming community,’’ he said.

He said GMB provincial accountants would liaise with their respective banks to accelerate transactions.
