PF has learnt lessons from MMD - Akafumba

WE have learnt lessons from the MMD and we will not rely on government coffers to grow the party, says PF Southern Province chairperson Joseph Akafumba. In an interview, Akafumba said the ruling party deliberately left out its secretary general Wynter Kabimba out of the government so that the party does not resort to vote buying during elections due to poor organisation.

"We don't want to resort to vote buying as did the MMD, they abandoned the party and got so drunk with power that they forgot the people. We want to grow the party and President Michael Sata and his vice Guy Scott are now doing double shifts. We shall not rely on taxpayer's money to grow the party. We don't want to move with trunks of moneys to try and buy people's trust," Akafumba said.

He said party organisation was an ongoing process and that this has not been abandoned after the PF won the 2011 elections.

"We know that UPND is very strong in Southern Province but by the fact that they don't own it, we have not given up after the elections on party re-organisation hence the engagement of Brian Hapunda as provincial political secretary," Akafumba said.

He said the PF needed to grow itself in the province and that he was happy with some recent defections of UPND and MMD members to the ruling party.

"We would like to assure the people of Southern Province that the PF and President Michael Sata mean well, they will not regret that they voted for the PF," he said.

Akafumba said the people of Southern Province have realised that the opposition parties would not take them anywhere.

"The UPND has lost value and have resorted to just opposing everything, they even opposed the shifting of the provincial head (headquarters) to Choma from Livingstone when all the people welcomed it," he said.

Akafumba said the PF was ready for the Livingstone parliamentary by-election from the time he petitioned the seat.

"We petitioned because we believed that we were robbed by the MMD, we are ready for the by-elections as yesterday," said Akafumba.
