GENERAL Malimba Masheke says Zambians should fight hard to preserve the unity and freedom won at independence. Gen Masheke, a freedom fighter, said it was his prayer to see the country united to preserve the freedom that was fought hard for. He said he was happy to have been a part of the struggle for independence.

"We fought for political freedom but now they should fight to develop the country and make sure that the young ones are not suffering from poverty," Gen Masheke said.

He advised the government to consider the interests of the people first.

"They (PF) must not fear anything when preserving the country, not to look at anybody but the interest of the people," he said.

And Gen Masheke said corruption needs a strong soldier like President Michael Sata to kill it.

Commenting on PF government's stance on the fight against corruption, Gen Masheke said fighting corruption was like fighting a war and urged the government not relent in the fight against the vice.

"So this government, I am very happy with what it's doing to fight corruption. Corruption is like a cancer, it's like a war. Corruption leaves potholes in the economy of a nation which would not be covered. So Mr Sata must not relent when it comes to fighting corruption," he said.

Gen Masheke said there should be no sacred cows in the fight against corruption, and that anyone involved in corrupt practices should be made accountable for their actions.

And Bernadette Sikanyika, also a freedom fighter and former governor in Dr Kenneth Kuanda's government, said opposition political parties should support the government in the fight against corruption because it was for a good cause.

"Corruption affects everybody but so far it's like its only President Sata who is in the forefront to fight it. These other political parties are not talking loudly on corruption but instead criticise this and that," said Sikanyika.
