Sichinga urges increased production of maize

AGRICULTURE minister Robert Sichinga says there is need for the country to increase maize productivity following the government's early distribution of fertiliser.

And acting Vubwi district commissioner, Mumba Nkholoma, says over 12,000 bags of D Compound fertiliser and about 6,276 bags of seed have already been distributed to the farmers in the district.

Addressing heads of government department in Vubwi on Thursday, Sichinga who toured the district to check on the availability and distribution of farming inputs said the government had done its part to distribute inputs early.

He urged farmers to work hard so that they could produce more next year.

He cautioned cooperatives and individuals against selling subsidised inputs that they obtained through the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) to neighbouring Malawi as this might lead to food shortages next year.

Sichinga said the government wants to use clubs and cooperatives as tools for development and that there was need for people to be honest.
He also urged the people of Vubwi to vote for PF's Margaret Miti in the forthcoming by-election.

Sichinga said Eastern Province MMD chairperson, Alexander Miti, already served the people of Vubwi as MP from 1996 to 2001 and that this time around, he should give chance to his younger sister, Margaret, to also represent the people of Vubwi.

Sichinga said by nature, women were responsible and that given opportunity, Margaret would not only develop Vubwi, but also contribute to the development of the nation.

The MMD has indicated that it would adopt Alexander Miti if Dr Eustarckio Kazonga was barred from standing by the Supreme Court which was currently determining his eligibility to stand.

And Nkholoma said the district was now waiting to receive 7,740 bags of Urea as 4,913 bags had already been distributed to the farmers last Wednesday.
