Finding Levy's successor will be competitive - Mabenga

THERE is going to be competition in finding President Levy Mwanawasa's successor, MMD national chairman Michael Mabenga has said. And Mabenga, who is also Mulobezi member of parliament, said works on the Simungoma-Mulobezi road had stagnated because a Namibian contractor who is to work on the road has had his goods held by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

In an interview, Mabenga said there was going to be competition in finding President Mwanawasa's successor. "I don't see any wrangle but there is going to be competition. It is possible there will be competition but competition must be allowed. There will be competition for leadership positions," he said. Asked if he had any intentions of contesting the party presidency, Mabenga said it was too early for him and other party members to start declaring their intentions for party positions. "I'm not saying I've not made up my mind. Doors have not yet opened yet for anyone to talk about positions, it's a long way to go. It's too early to start looking for a successor to President Mwanawasa," Mabenga said.

Reminded that the Supreme Court recommended for his prosecution following his misapplying of K30 million, Constituency Development Fund (CDF), Mabenga said he was not guilty of any crime because he was not attending any court session. "It is you people The Post who have been escalating these things because you keep on talking and talking about them. As far as I am concerned, I am not guilty of any crime," Mabenga said.

And Mabenga said equipment for the road contractor from Namibia have been marooned for one month at the Katima Mulilo border because ZRA has not cleared them. "Construction for the Simungoma-Mulobezi road has been delayed because of the complications with ZRA. They are trying to ensure things are done properly so that they release the equipment. They have been stranded at Katima-Mulilo border for almost a month," said Mabenga.

We can only observe how this unfolds, from what we have seen so far from Mugabe,Obasanjo, etc
in Africa you just wait and see.

I think Mwanawasa doesn't have the strength to go on and on.

On the other hand, he may end up governing from a wheelchair or a hospital bed, who knows.

But it is very well possible that they'll just have a conference someone will be appointed.

What I'm more concerned with is whether this will lead to a change in mindset or even a new generation moving up.
