Cuba ready to help Zambia implement free education

Cuba ready to help Zambia implement free education
By Times Reporter

CUBAN ambassador to Zambia Francisco Correa has said his government is ready to assist the country implement the free education policy. Mr Chorea, who was addressing Evenly Hone College students in Lusaka yesterday, also said Cuba was ready to send teachers to help in the education sector in Zambia.

He said his country had been offering free education and that Cuba was ready to offer assistance that Zambia needed in the form of free education. “We are ready to help Zambia in any form to implement the free education policy. As at now we cannot do anything because we are still waiting for a response from the Ministry of Education. We have presented a draft called ‘Cuban Method of Study Against Illiteracy’ which entails on how our policies on free education can be used in the Zambian education sector,” Mr Correa said.

The envoy has, meanwhile, commended members of Parliament (MPs) for unanimously adopting a motion to extend free education up to Grade 12 level. Mr Correa said free education had helped Cuba to train professionals in the country and that Zambia could do the same through free education. Mr Correa said education was vital in the development of any country and also in alleviating poverty.

Parliament last week unanimously passed a motion urging Government to extend free education to Grade 12 level. This was in the view of high poverty in the country and the resultant high rate of school dropouts at Grades Seven and Nine levels. Mr Correa, however, urged the youth not to engage in illicit relationships that would harm their future but instead concentrate on their studies and contribute positively to the development of the country.
