ALL People’s Congress (APC) party president Ken Ngondo has said government will have a tough time dealing with the issue of corruption in land allocation. In an interview, Ngondo said it would not be easy to deal with corruption in land allocation, as there were many people involved.
Ngondo said poverty was the biggest challenge in land administration and that many people became councillors simply to acquire land. “There is no problem, we have plenty of land. The problem is poverty. People have gone in as councillors just to have land. Did you know that a mayor is entitled to a farm under the current laws and every councillor is entitled to a plot?” he asked. “There is more to it. The land issue you cannot win as government because it involves everybody.”
And Ngondo called on Zambians not to demonise former lands minister Reverend Gladys Nyirongo over allegations of corrupt practices. “Don’t demonise Mrs Nyirongo. Does it mean when you work for the Ministry of Lands you should not have a plot for you and your children? Is that what it means, no! She is entitled to that land,” he said. “What is the problem is we Zambians because of our poverty, we are the ones who sell the land. Don’t you want to have a piece of land?”
Ngondo said Zambians have short memories and had forgotten about the controversial university land.
