FOUR Patriotic Front Copperbelt mayors are today scheduled to meet to decide whether they will continue meeting President Mwanawasa at the airport. This comes after the four mayors of Kitwe, Ndola, Chingola, Mufulira and a deputy mayor from Chililabombwe left the airport where they had gone to welcome President Mwanawasa after MMD cadres started chanting slogans against PF on Sunday.

The mayors complained that the MMD cadres always attacked them each time they went
to welcome the President at the airport.

Ndola mayor Anthony Katongo said although the mayorshttp://www2.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=14221184#
FDD had accepted apologies made by local government minister Sylvia Masebo and MMD national secretary Richard Kachingwe at the golf club on Sunday, a meeting would be held to chart the way forward.

Katongo in an interview said as mayors, they did not want to be drawn into political antagonism when there were so many challenges that needed to be met.

“ We have this thing which keeps on repeating itself. So as mayors we’ll suggest something on how we intend to go on. We don’t want political antagonism. We are faced with a lot of challenges in every city on the Copperbelt such as salary arreas, low service delivery and the service we provide to the people is not reaching the highest level,” he said.

He said political differences would only make them lose focus in their quest to provide social amenities in their respective communities.

“ We don’t want to lose focus but to make a difference in the cities we run than to be drawn into political squabbling. We must have a solution to our problems so that this treatment we are getting comes to an end. We feel we are being treated like kids,” complained Katongo.
