SHOPRITE manager Charles Bota has disclosed that all the employees of the gutted Cairo Road store will be deployed to other outlets. Commenting on the future of the jobs of the workers, Bota yesterday also said the Shoprite Kafue road branch would be a wholesale and retail outlet.
“We have agreed that we relocate all the employees to other branches in Lusaka. They will go to Manda Hill, Matero, Chilenje outlets and Kafue road warehouse,” Bota said. “The Kafue wholesale will also be opened as a retail shop in the next one or two weeks.”
On the cause of the fire, Bota said the management was still waiting for the findings of the investigations.
“We don’t know, we are waiting for the investigations. Investigations are going on right now,” said Bota.
A check at Shoprite Kafue branch found several workers waiting to be assigned the outlets they would be working from.
Some workers talked to said they were happy to be relocated.
“Yes, we will be taken to other shops,” a worker said.
On Sunday, Lusaka deputy mayor Steve Chilatu urged Shoprite not to layoff the workers on the pretext that the shop had been gutted.
Chilatu said the fire took long to extinguish because Shoprite management did not allow the fire fighters to enter the place where fire broke out.
“I hope there is nothing fishy about these fires because this is not the first time Shoprite is being gutted,” said Chilatu. “I’m waiting for a full-scale investigation on the cause of the fire.”
Fire broke out at Shoprite Cairo Road outlet on Friday and it was only extinguished on Sunday, around midday.
The second floor of the building was gutted barely a year after fire broke out in the same shop.
