BRENDA Phiri of Shashi suburb in Bindura was on Saturday crowned this year’s Mashonaland Central Miss Big Matofotofo and will represent the province at the national beauty pageant to be held in October. Phiri walked away $2 million richer, while her first and second princesses, Fumisai Fingala and Kudzanai Chida, both of Chipadze suburb, were awarded $1,5 million and $1 million respectively.

Besides the cash prizes, Phiri also received a goat and will have a chance to spend two nights at Fish Lodge, Lake Chivero, Harare, with her partner. Fingala and Chida will also enjoy a two-day holiday for two at the same lodge. Speaking after the crowning ceremony, an excited Phiri said she would pursue modelling as a career. She said she would like to see other well-built women gaining confidence in themselves and taking up modelling.

Phiri said she was out to prove to other women that being big was not a curse. Florence Mehlomakhulu of Lwazi Promotions, who organised the show, said the pageant’s primary aim was to instill confidence in "big" women and remind them that there was nothing abnormal about being "oversize".

"We also want to remind other people like commuter omnibus operators that such women do not deserve ill-treatment or be asked to pay double fares as they were created by God like anyone else," she said.

Phiri and her two princesses have already begun preparations for the national competitions in Harare. Dino Mudondo added the musical flavour to the show with a polished performance.
