VICE-PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda is today expected in Harare as President Levy Mwanawasa’s special envoy to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. According to the programme from the Zambian Embassy in Harare, Vice-President Banda and his entourage are expected to arrive at Harare International Airport in the afternoon today.

The Vice-President will then proceed for a meeting with President Mugabe at State House in the evening. After the meeting at State House, Vice-President Banda will attend a special dinner hosted by the Zambian Embassy at Ambassador Sheila Siwela’s residence.

Vice-President Banda and his entourage are expected to leave Harare tomorrow morning.
And Ambassador Siwela has said peace, security and political stability were the pillars for socio-economic development.

“In this regard, our SADC vision which calls for a shared future, which is underpinned by the historical bonds of the member states and their citizens ought to be embraced within the context and historical processes, and experience such as what we are experiencing today,” Ambassador Siwela said at the close of a Civil Military Coordination course at the SADC regional peacekeeping training centre in Harare.

She said Africa had every reason to be proud of the endeavours and strides it was taking in the region.

“Africa is now witnessing new challenges for peacemaking, especially that of capturing the positive momentum generated by successful peace agreements. Issues of disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration are particularly worth noting,” Ambassador Siwela said.

She commended the recent Darfur agreement, the peace processes in the Democratic Republic of Congo and also called for further progress in Somalia and other troubled areas around the continent.
