A SENIOR officer in the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Gapara, was found dead in his hotel room in Lusaka, Zambia on Friday last week. He was 37. Superintendent Andrew Phiri confirmed the death yesterday, saying Asst Comm Gapara died after suffering from acute respiratory arrest.
He had gone to Zambia to attend the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation meeting, which is held ahead of the heads of state summit for the Southern Africa Development Community.
Born on January 2 1970 in Chipinge, Asst Comm Gapara did his primary education at Big Tree School and thereafter attended Chikore Secondary School and Mount Selinda High for his Ordinary and Advanced level.
In 1990, he graduated from the University of Zimbabwe after studying for a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Politics and Administration.
He was also a holder of a Masters degree in Business Administration from the UZ and was studying for an Accounting degree with the Zimbabwe Open University.
Asst Comm Gapara also held certificates in personnel management, training methods and obtained a Tanzanian certificate in project planning, monitoring and evaluation.
On May 29 1995, he was attested into the ZRP as a graduate constable trainee where he was subsequently promoted to the ranks of sergeant, assistant inspector, inspector, superintendent, chief superintendent and finally assistant commissioner in 2005.
At the time of his death he was the senior staff officer for planning and development at the PGHQ.
Asst Comm Gapara is survived by his wife Ellinah and three children.
