Police in Mazabuka have arrested and detained the national chairman for the Cotton Association of Zambia (CAZ) and a named local high school teacher in connection with the alleged theft of K168 million belonging to Alliance Cotton Zambia Limited. Criminal investigations officer, Elijah Zyambo said in Mazabuka yesterday that investigations into the matter are progressing.

He said police have since managed to seize a number of properties believed to have been bought using the stolen funds.

Zyambo said preliminary investigations have established that the Cotton Association of Zambia chairman, Mweemba Malambo was contracted by Alliance Cotton, a ginning company to buy cotton seed which was earmarked for distribution to cotton farmers in readiness for the 2007/2008 farming season but the funds were instead pocketed.

Zyambo who declined to give further details for fear of jeopardizing investigations said details would be released once more recoveries were made.
Cotton Alliance country director, Patrick Nyumbu promised to issue a detailed report on the matter.

Meanwhile, DUNAVANT area manager, Charles Kashina said the arrest of Malambo would bring sanity to the cotton industry which had allegedly been infiltrated by dishonest members.
