ALCOHOL abuse and sex have become the order of the day for most youths in Zambia because of unemployment, a 20-year-old Lusaka youth has said. And United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said young people in many parts of the world continue to be marginalised and ignored.
Commenting of the International Youth Day which fell yesterday, Abel Ng’andu, 20, said since unemployment levels were very high, most youths had resorted to drinking alcohol and having unprotected casual sex.
Ng’andu said most youths were finishing school or college and could not find employment.
He said it was even worse for youths in rural areas who had resorted to marriage due to lack of alternative preoccupations.
“Just take a walk to the bars and see the age group of people drinking beer, or find out how many young unmarried people get pregnant, you will be surprised that they are so many because they have nothing to do because they can’t find jobs. AIDS can’t finish like this,” he said.
