ZAMBIA Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) has entered into negotiations for a positive business relationship with South Korean and Filipino entrepreneurs in different areas of the economy. ZACCI chief executive officer Justine Chisulo said the organisation was trying to enter into a partnership with some South Korean business entrepreneurs in areas such as solid waste management.

“We had a meeting last week with the Zambian Ambassador to Japan Mr Godfrey Simasiku. We discussed a number of things with regard to the development of Zambian business entrepreneurs,” said Chisulo in an interview. “What we are looking at with the South Korean business entrepreneurs is a partnership where the Zambia Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) members will benefit in areas such as solid waste disposal. We have noticed that as a country, we are lagging behind in terms of good disposal of solid waste.”

Chisulo said Zambian businessmen could learn a lot from successes scored by South Korean entrepreneurs in waste management.

“We have a lot of plastics being littered around town and the issue is how we can recycle these products,” Chisulo said. “What is needed is some knowledge on how to go about the process of recycling plastics in order to encourage good waste management practices in Zambia like the other countries are doing.”

Chisulo further said the chamber movement was looking at ways of how the newly established Multi Facility Economic Zones (MFEZ) could benefit its members.
“As the chamber, we are looking at how members of ZACCI can benefit from the MFEZ which falls under the private sector development programme (PSDP),” Chisulo said. “We are also encouraging the South Korean and Philippine businessmen to look into possibilities of being part of the MFEZ in Zambia. We are making necessary approaches on how government and the private sector can work together to facilitate the smooth implementation of the MFEZ.”

The government has already designated land in Chambishi on the Copperbelt Province and Lusaka for development by the Chinese and Malaysian businessmen respectively under the MFEZ.
